Welcome to my blog. I am wife, mother, and now blogger. This blog is about our family’s adventure in raising a highly gifted plus child (DS – 8). I use the term highly gifted plus (HG+) because his scores range from highly gifted to exceptionally gifted depending on the definition of gifted. I am a former practicing Licensed Specialist in School Psychology in the state of TX. I am still currently maintaining my state license and my national certification through CEUs. However, I am not practicing. Instead I am now the “director” of Hahn Academy. Our son came up with the name to our home school after we left public school. On my blog I will share information on giftedness, homeschooling, and lots of resources available. I am hoping that others will not be scared by the journey of raising a gifted child nor be scared by choosing the path of homeschooling & roadschooling. We use the term roadschooling because we take weekly field-trips as well as traveling on weekends or longer vacations.

I am a retired clinical psychologist who specialized in marriage and family issues and now have a highly gifted grandson. We have two other grandchildren who are gifted but not at this level. It is a scary road to begin home schooling for both my daughter and me. Your blog has given us courage to begin and resources to employ on our journey. You are welcome! I have met a couple other school psychologists who are also on the same journey as homeschooling a gifted a child. And you are not alone on homeschooling! There are lots of teachers and retired teachers doing it too. Good luck with your journey!

Here I am, scribbling notes down in my handy-dandy notebook, scratching my head, my bum and trying to sponge this all up. Thank you for providing your list of resources and reference information. At age five, decisions are encroaching upon me like oxpeckers to my hippo rump. It is very easy to be overwhelmed and I am struggling for breath as I am weighed down by facts. I am so very glad you have this blog.

Not a problem! Having a PG kid can be overwhelming to say the least. Enjoy the adventure. You are doing amazing things with your kid. We just let ours pull us along and find the materials we need to support him. It is about all we can do.

Heather, After following your blog for 3 years now, I’m finally saying Hi. Thank you for being in Houston and putting yourself out there. There seems to be a dearth of PG connections out there and certainly no one in public. Just wanted to say thanks, and we’ll probably be following in your footsteps, as we realize even private school isn’t fulfilling what DS8 needs.

You are welcome! I admit, we didn’t come out right away but decided to use this forum as a way to document our adventures and highlight that there is another way when traditional schools don’t work. I would have never predicted this was going to be our path, but we are enjoying it!
